Have a question that should be in our Hospitality Job Training FAQ? Email it to us through the Contact page!
~ How do our certificates and diplomas differ from those obtained in a “bricks and mortar” college?
In either case, the Certificates and Diplomas are issued by the Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) and do NOT differ in any way!
~ I have been in the industry for several years. Is it possible to challenge the exam without previous studies?
Yes! If you feel you have enough experience and knowledge of the subject matter, you can challenge the exam without study. The cost of challenging the exam without the textbook is $195. You still get the accompanying set of highlights to prepare for the exam. Also, you write the exam when YOU are ready!
~ I can’t afford the full payment. Can I still get started?
Yes! Full payment is not a requirement. You can purchase the full program one course at a time.
~ I’ve already taken some of the courses and have the certificates. Do I get credit for them?
Absolutely! Just tell us which ones you have completed! A permanent record of all grades is maintained at the Institute for the benefit of everyone who takes courses. If they are part of the program you’ve chosen, you won’t have to do it again.
~ What happens if I fail the Final Exam?
The Educational Institute corrects and grades the comprehensive Final Examination. Official results take 3 to 4 weeks but you won’t have to wait that long to get my answer. I can let you know your (unofficial) score within a few hours. A score of 70% or better is required to pass. A first retake (similar exam) is available for a small $25 charge for any student who happens to fail the first time. Once in the hands of your instructor, you will be granted a grace period to prepare for the retake exam. By the way, a second retake is possible for an additional fee of $75. Each “retake” exam is different from the previous one!
~ How useful are those certificates and diploma?
Very useful and worldwide at that! These are Industry-Recognized Certificates and Diplomas and are awarded upon successful completion of each course. They are your tangible proof of achievement and represent competence and professionalism. These certificates and Diplomas are the evidence to your commitment to the Hospitality Industry!
~ I have a friend who has the program’s textbooks I could utilize. Can I save money by using his (books)?
We understand the rationale. The latest edition of textbooks is available brand new at a reasonable price for each course. Each textbook comes with its own unique scantron (Answer Sheet) used by E.I for the Final Exam. However, you can still save money by using a second hand textbook and you would normally need to purchase the scantron separately (Cdn $50) to write the exam but for a limited time there will be no charge: my $50 gift to you! By the way, as you plan your professional development, this is a good place to recommend “building up your own library”!
~ If results from the “Progress Tests” don’t matter for the successful completion of the course(s), why should I bother with them?
Progress tests can be used as the milestones for measuring your progress toward your goal of completing each course! Correspondents have the option to ignore the Progress tests and concentrate uniquely on the “Highlights” that come with the course material. However, a progress test is provided for each chapter to help you effectively monitor your own progress. These can help you recognize hidden potential as well as weak areas. Beside that, they keep you in touch with your online Instructor.
~ I live close to Vancouver, B.C.! Do I still need to pay for the postage?
No; just as long as you are willing to pick up the course material and future certificates / diploma in person or through a friend.
~ What does it mean the final exam is administered by proctor?
Our courses can be taken from anywhere in the world. Wherever you are in the world, chances are you know someone who can qualify as your proctor. A proctor is a person who can be trusted to administer the final examination without compromising its integrity. That person can be a professional business person, a manager or a member of clergy you deal with. You recommend the person and we contact him or her to assess and qualify his/her status as potential proctor. To protect the integrity of the test, proctors must volunteer and are NOT remunerated.
~ What prerequisites are needed to register for the program?
There are no prerequisite. School grades are not a prerequisite. Only the desire to succeed and a working knowledge of English are required.
~ I don’t have a computer and no easy access to one. Can I still take the program by correspondence?
Yes! A computer is a desirable tool but if necessary we can communicate by regular mail just like in the old days…
~ I’m not sure about studying online and taking classes by correspondence. Can you recommend some links to websites of interest?
I’m happy to do just that. I am happily and currently teaching at Greystone College. Here is the link:
…and here are other links of learning institutions I personally recommend:
Vancouver Career College
Royal Roads University
Canadian International Career College

~ When I am done with my studies and I have the Hospitality Diploma in my name, what can I do to ensure I reach further up the top?
I’m glad you asked. Professional development is not a one-time deal; it’s an ongoing process. By getting more training and developing your abilities and attitudes, you will be contributing to your own success and to the future of the hospitality industry. Below is a list of advanced certifications available:
